Biologists visit 'Constable Country' to carry out fieldwork investigations

Year 13 students enjoyed a recent Biology Field Course that enabled them to cover the ecological elements of the IB syllabus and provided the option of carrying out an individual investigation to gather the data needed to complete their Internal Assessment.

Students stayed at Flatford Mill Field Studies Centre, which is set amidst the quintessentially English countryside of 'Constable Country' in Suffolk and sits on the banks of the River Stour. Apart from the last morning, we had excellent weather and it was clear that our students gained much from the experience.

Students reflected on the experience:

I found that practising ecology work really helped me understand what I needed to do on the day of collecting the data for my IA.

It was fun to see more unique habitats (e.g. saltmarsh).

I enjoyed being able to work as a group, working together to collect research data.
