Information for Parents, Carers, Employers and Staff

Parents

In keeping with our commitment to provide students with careers guidance and tailored support when choosing their next steps after TGS, we use Unifrog; an award-winning, online destinations platform. All students in Years 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13 have access to this website.

Unifrog is the universal destinations platform and is designed to support learners in making the most informed decisions about their futures and has a range of tools that are suitable for all year groups.

Parents also have a log into to UniFrog(login details will be provided).  You’ll be able to research careers, attend webinars delivered by employers and universities to learn more about their opportunities, and compare pathways so you can support your child in making an informed decision about their next steps.

You can also sign up to Unifrog’s parent / carer newsletter when you first sign in to get expert advice and guidance on supporting your child with their next steps. For more information, go to www.unifrog.org

Read CXK’s blog, A Parent/Carer Guide to Post-16 Options, for how to support your child with their post-16 choices.

Information for Staff

All teachers should link curriculum learning with careers. For example, STEM subject teachers should highlight the relevance of STEM subjects for a wide range of future career paths.

Why is embedding careers in the curriculum so important?

  • Students feel more engaged in their learning when they perceive the relevance of what they are studying to their own and other people’s lives .
  • Students become more aspirational, understanding that perceived barriers can be overcome and that there are numerous pathways to success .
  • Subject teachers are highly influential – students are 18 times more likely to be motivated to learn if their teachers know their hopes and dreams.
  • Staff highlighting the relevance of their subject to future careers and opportunities creates social capital for young people with more limited networks.

“Improving career guidance in secondary schools and colleges can lead to better student outcomes, while also raising aspirations and increasing engagement with education”,

Top Tips for embedding Careers in your subject:

  • Highlight the employability skills that the students are using in your lesson, such as speaking, teamwork, creativity, leadership.
  • Include examples of potential future job roles as a starter or plenary.
  • Display a poster promoting the skills and careers your subject links to.
  • Share stories about your own career path.
  • Discover your students’ hopes for the future.
  • Invite in a guest to talk to your students about their career and how your subject inspired them.

Get involved: Parents, Carers, Employers and Employees

At TGS we work with numerous employers and employees across a range of industries. It is our aim to provide encounters with employers and employees and experiences of the workplace, as set out below:

Gatsby Benchmark 5Encounters with Employers and Employees

  • To ensure that students receive at least ONE meaningful encounter with an employer during every year they are at school.
  • Increase the number of activities which are conducted within school with the support of local employers and parents.
  • To ensure that students have the opportunity to improve employability skills and their understanding of and awareness of entrepreneurship.
  • To enable learners to gain the confidence to compete in the labour market by providing opportunities to gain the practical know-how and attributes that are relevant to gaining employment.
  • Develop marketing materials for employers which will help them easily understand the impact of their involvement, the breadth of options available to them and the ways in which they can show they meet their corporate social responsibility.
  • Create mechanisms where parents and alumni can express their interest to actively support employer related activity taking place within the school.

Gatsby Benchmark 6Experiences of the workplace

  • To ensure that students receive at least ONE meaningful experience of the workplace by the end of year 11 .
  • To ensure that students receive at least ONE further meaningful experience of the workplace during year 12.
  • To increase the number of employer workplace visits which will take place to enable students to gain more of an understanding of the wide range of employment opportunities available within specific industry sectors.
