"Through the CERN-Particle School Essay Competition we were able to get an invitation to see the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in August with students from other schools. A particular highlight of this trip was going into the Antimatter Factory and being able to talk to Dr Joseph McKenna who showed and discussed with us the silicon detector which he uses in his research into antihydrogen annihilation in the ALPHA experiments.

It was an incredible experience to see all the experiment sites and talk to the physicists and engineers working on each project".

This was an amazing achievement by the students. There were only eighteen available places across schools in the South-East, Birmingham and Liverpool regions. Places were offered based on selection of essays, written by students, from a set list of titles, marked by the CERN research team. A very well done to them both.
