Medsoc members learn about life as a senior partner in a GP surgery from Dr Claire Sillitoe

Our thanks to Dr Claire Sillitoe who joined Medsoc on a zoom call to talk about her experience as a senior partner in a GP Surgery. She discussed her biggest advice for med school, which is that it is a marathon not a sprint and getting into medical school is just the first step of many.

She also told members about her elective in India, travelling to a smaller hospital to look at unique cases that she had not seen anywhere else, eg. cholera and tuberculosis.

We then had an opportunity to ask questions, and a particularly good one was, ‘What is the best and worst part of your job?’. To which she answered, that the best part is being a biological detective by working through problems and ticking off possible diagnoses in her head until she finds the one that fits all the symptoms; the worst part she described was how the NHS (particularly in mental health) does not have access to enough resources to help everyone as they should be and in the time they need to be helped.

All in all, this was a very valuable experience, and I am sure more things like this will be arranged in the future!
