Celebrating 120 years of Tonbridge Grammar School

The wider school community came together this week to start the School’s 120th year anniversary celebrations.

Friday Celebrations

Students were delighted to welcome Fiona (Miss Taylor’s great great niece) to learn more about the School’s beginnings; just 19 students in a room above Tonbridge Library before it moved to its current site and began to be known as ‘School on the Hill’.

Students were interested to learn how Miss Taylor believed in the importance of a global education; following her time at TGS she set up schools around the world and returned to school to tell students about her experiences. They felt she would be pleased that they are enjoying an international education.

Miss Taylor also believed that everyone has the power to shape the world we live in, something that is core to today’s TGS experience.  She certainly led by example.  She was an active supporter of womens’ rights and suffrage and vice president of  the Tonbridge Branch of NUWSS (National Union of Womens’ Suffrage Societies).  It was fascinating to see a picture of her at a rally on Tonbridge High Street.

The stormy weather cleared to allow the community to come together outside to raise our new 120th anniversary flag to the school song ‘School on the Hill’ sung by students and accompanied by brass instruments.

There was the opportunity for students to undertake a House led quiz on the history of the School and to make a submission to a competition on the theme 1905 (either words or art work).

In afternoon lessons students explored how teaching and learning and Tonbridge has changed in the last 120 years through the lens of a particular subject.  Geographers looked at maps of the area to see how the local area had changed, scientists explored key scientific changes during the period and PE students tried their steps at performing the Charleston!

It was wonderful to host over 200 alumni to Tonbridge Grammar School on Saturday.  Following a welcome by Mrs Crean the celebration cake, beautifully crafted by former student Zuzi Ledger (née White) class of 1997, was cut by Mary Winch (née Kemp) class of 1957.

The Mitchener Hall was then filled with a rousing rendition of the School Song led by Mr Adrian Pitts former Head of Music.

Throughout the day our students toured our visitors all over the School as we know it today, and to the places that were more familiar to them! They took pictures in a photobooth run by current student Bonnie and  poured over memorabilia and old school photographs in The Library, including PE and sports tours in the years that PE department was run by Miss Gibbs, Miss Smith and the much-loved late Miss Page. History Archive Club captured some wonderful school memories for TGS 120 chapters (see TGS Connections / News).  Lots of school stories were shared and there was much laughter throughout the School.

I just want to say a very big 'thank you' for a wonderful day on Saturday. It was amazing to meet up with friends from my year cohort (1984) and relive our school days together. The Head Teacher's introduction was inspiring, and it was moving to sing the school song again after so many years. I enjoyed creating new memories with old friends as we are all turning 60 this year or next year and it was a great opportunity to meet up after a long time and spend the day reminiscing. I haven't laughed so much in a long time! I appreciate all your hard work in putting the day together - the lovely displays of photos, school magazines, uniforms etc, and the kind attention of the girls who showed us around. It really was a day to remember.
