English

Subject overview

Words have never been more powerful. They connect people. They tell tales. They create Art. They are also used to exploit, to manipulate and exert power across the globe. That is why the study of Language and Literature remains so vital.

In English at Tonbridge Grammar School, you will discover new concepts and acquire new skills that allow you to critically engage with the world, never taking what you read at face value. We want you to understand the power of language and become inquisitive readers and expert writers.

As English teachers, we delight in the diversity of Literature and its ability to transcend nationality, race, gender and class. We want you as budding English scholars to introduce us to new authors and texts that expand our minds and defy our expectations, and we promise the same in return.
