Year 12 visit London Library as part of their Extended Essay Day

On the last day of Term 3, as part of the Year 12 Extended Essay Day, 19 students visited the London Library. Students writing essays in English and History had an opportunity to visit and study at this remarkable London institution.

A private members' library, founded in 1841, we are fortunate to benefit from their subsidised schools' membership program allowing us to visit, carry out research and even borrow the books. Students always enjoy these days and this year was no different.

'The trip to the London Library was such a valuable and focused experience for our Extended Essays and gave me so many useful sources from the library’s vast collection. The academic atmosphere was all consuming and ensured optimal productivity in the time we had. I would love to return here in the future.'

'The library felt like something out of a picture book and I think the sights alone would be a brilliant experience even if you weren’t a self-acknowledged bookworm. Without the library’s low volume policy, everyone would have been in a positive stunned silence anyway; there was something incredibly special about being in a place with books from many hundreds of years ago.'

Libraries are a natural home for so many of us and I love to see the effect that this particular library has on our students. Amanda Stebbings, the Librarian who supports us, provides each student with research that she has carried out about their topic in order to get them started and gives a wonderful tour. We are fortunate to have a very good library at TGS, but this is a different world.
