Srija (Y12) leads programme designed to inspire girls into technology

Encouraging inclusivity and enriching diverse perspectives and ideas in the tech industry remains a prevalent goal. AWS GetIT is a programme dedicated to inspiring girls into tech, where students have the opportunity to design and present an app idea of their choice in a team and get selected to win. This initiative allowed the Year 9s to develop their skills, collaborate on creative projects to solve real-world issues, and gain confidence in their abilities to innovate and lead in tech.

Over the course of the 10-week programme, I had to opportunity to collaborate with Mrs Nixon and our dedicated AWS GetIT ambassador to take the students through a series of educational and hands-on modules around topics such as the Design-Thinking Cycle, Artificial Intelligence, App Design, and more! Over 30 Year 9s were able to gain insight into the fundamentals of app design and development to create their own unique prototypes with mock-ups and wireframes to take us through their solutions. They addressed global and everyday issues such as sustainable fashion, mental health, culinary skills for youth, and timetabling!

Each group presented outstanding 15-minute pitches for their products, and we are so proud of their work! With the help of the Computer Science Ambassadors as our panel of judges, the Year 9s were able to comprehensively answer a round of questions about their product and future developments.

Congratulations to Aashvi, Raima , Ashmi, Anoushka , and Bo (team hAPPy, pictured) for being nominated to enter the national competition from our school, and to all the students who took part! The judges and I were impressed by everyone’s creative ideas, teamwork and amazing presentations.

AWS GetIT has been an incredible journey of learning, creativity and resilience and I am glad everyone was able to develop technical skills and confidence in their ability to innovate and lead. I am immensely grateful for the dedication and enthusiasm from all the participants, it exceeded our expectations and we are proud to celebrate everyone’s achievements and teamwork. We look forward to supporting them as they continue to explore further opportunities in technology and sustain this momentum with ongoing resources and initiatives.

Thank you to all the participants, judges, and teachers who made this journey and competition a success!
