Medsoc enjoy talk by alumna Emily who is a speech and language therapist at Salford Royal Hospital

TGS alumna, Emily, talked to us about being a speech and language therapist (SLT) who did a 3-year BSc at Manchester University. There are 18,300 SLTs in the UK who treat patients with difficulties in communication or swallowing.  Their work includes working with adults, in paediatric care and with adults with learning disabilities.

Emily is currently working at Salford Royal Hospital, where she specialises in acute, major trauma, critical care and stroke patients. She also has to do mental capacity assessments on her patients.

She explained more about university entry criteria for SLT and the application process which, for her, included MMIs (multiple mini-interviews). Emily’s course involved anatomy and psychology, linguistics, research methods and placements and was either 3 or 4 years depending on intercalation.

This was a super interesting session, especially hearing from a past TGS student!
