Seville: A cultural adventure

On 18 October, a group of 40 Year 11 and 13 students and 4 teachers set off on an exciting adventure to Seville, the capital of Andalusia, Spain. The four-day trip offered a perfect mix of culture, history, and fun, with plenty of opportunities to immerse ourselves in local traditions and explore the stunning sights of this historic city.

Day 1: Journey to Seville

The trip began with an afternoon departure from school, with the students excitedly leaving their bags in Mr. Ellis' room as we all gathered for lunch before heading to the airport. Though our original flight was delayed a bit, the group remained upbeat, and after a long journey, we finally arrived in Seville at 9:00 PM. After a short coach ride to our youth hostel, we all settled in and unpacked, and after such an eventful day, it wasn’t long before most of us were fast asleep, getting ready for what was to come!

Day 2: Isla Mágica, Flamenco and Bullfighting

Our second day in Seville was a blend of excitement and cultural immersion. After a brief free time to enjoy the views, the Spanish gang departed towards their first attraction- Isla Mágica. In the Theme Park, we were given a few hours to try as many rides as possible, but there were a few queues!

Later, the group visited the Flamenco Museum, where we not only learnt about the history of Flamenco dancing, but we also had the privilege of watching a Flamenco show.

After this wonderful experience, we headed off to dinner at a restaurant called Mesones del Serranito, where we were treated to traditional Andalusian and Spanish dishes such as Salmorejo, Paella con Carne, and a sweet Tarta for dessert. After dinner, students had some free time to shop or simply explore the streets of Seville, soaking up the vibrant atmosphere and the lovely late-summer temperatures. The evening also included an unexpected treat—a lively local parade in honour of Seville’s patron Saint that added a festive touch to our first proper night in Seville.

Day 3: Exploring Seville’s Rich History

At the beginning of our second full day in Seville, we had the brilliant opportunity to attend a language workshop at the Enforex Spanish Language School. Students participated in a great lesson, practising their Spanish in a real-world setting, learning new vocabulary related to Andalusian and Spanish culture. It was a fantastic way to enhance the trip's educational value and immerse ourselves further into the Spanish language.

In the afternoon, we visited the Torre del Oro, an iconic 13th-century watchtower by the river. The tower offers spectacular views of the Guadalquivir River and Seville’s skyline. Afterward, we had time for some free exploration, with many students choosing to wander the nearby streets, do some shopping, or simply enjoy the atmosphere of Seville.

Then, we made our way to a local flamenco workshop for to experience this iconic Andalusian art form. The walk through the narrow streets of Seville set the perfect mood for what was to come. At the workshop, students were guided through the basics of flamenco, learning some essential moves and patterns. The lesson was full of laughter, and even the teachers got involved, giving it a go and embracing the spirit of flamenco! It was a fun and interactive way for everyone to experience this classic element of Spanish culture.

In the afternoon, we made our way to the Museo Taurino (Bullfighting Museum), where we gained insight into Seville’s long history with bullfighting. The museum provided a fascinating look at this sometimes controversial and deeply ingrained aspect of Andalusian culture, with exhibits exploring the lives of famous bullfighters and the tradition of bullfighting itself.

To round off the day, we ventured to Las Setas, a large wooden structure and viewing platform in the middle of the city. We arrived in perfect time to catch the beautiful golds, oranges and purples of the sunset, as it cast its light over the cityscape and, perhaps because it was a bit of an unknown, it seemed to be the highlight of the entire trip for a lot of the students!

Day 4: The Final Adventures

On our last day in Seville, the group had the pleasure of returning to the Enforex Spanish Language School once again for a cultural and linguistic exchange session. Students were able to converse with the native Spanish speaking teachers, improving their language skills while learning more about local customs and traditions. This interactive experience helped reinforce everything we had been learning throughout the trip and gave students a chance to practise their Spanish in a friendly, supportive environment.

Then, to begin the end of our time in Seville, we visited the Plaza de España, a stunning landmark in the heart of Parque de María Luisa. Students had the chance to admire the architecture and the mosaics on the buildings, representing different regions of Spain. After some time to wander and explore, and with our hearts full of memories and bellies full of Spanish delights, we headed to the airport for our return flight, reflecting on a truly unforgettable trip.

After our long trip back home, we finally arrived back at the Sovereign Way car park late at night, ready for a rest and a good sleep.
