Year 13 students enjoy Robert Icke’s powerful new dramatisation of the tragic tale of Oedipus

Twelve Year 13 students gathered eagerly at The Wyndham Theatre on a Monday evening and were collectively amazed by the incredible performances of Mark Strong (Oedipus) and Lesley Manville (Jocasta) playing the leading roles in Robert Icke’s powerful new dramatisation of the tragic tale of Oedipus.

His retelling retained the original Greek names, but this story was of a family gathering on election night, excitedly awaiting a favourable result for their ‘paterfamilias’ and national leader elect, Oedipus.

With the original myth well known to most, there was a real emotional drain as high-spirited dinner conversations circled without landing the killer punches. Then as the shades of the distant past became brutally and incrementally exposed, we were on the edge of our seats to witness the incredible and agonising denouement.

It was a performance that shocked, exhausted and delighted in equal measure. I’m sure none of us will forget it.
