Year 13 Philosophy students gain an insight into the role of ethics in journalism from Julia George

Year 13 Philosophy students were privileged to meet Julia George, who shared compelling insights into her remarkable career as a BBC broadcaster and her current work with the charity Women in Sport, dedicated to challenging and breaking gender stereotypes.

Drawing on years of experience reporting from around the globe, students were captivated with stories of pivotal moments in her career. Julia highlighted the critical role ethics play in journalism, emphasising the balance between uncovering the truth and staying within ethical boundaries. Her reflections offered a profound perspective on how journalists navigate complex moral dilemmas to report with integrity.

Beyond ethics, Julia encouraged students to develop their own beliefs, embrace strong opinions, and find their unique voice in a world of diverse perspectives. Which links to her current work with Women in Sport, where she champions inclusivity and challenges outdated gender stereotypes in the sporting world.

Julia’s visit left students inspired, offering valuable lessons about the importance of ethical storytelling, personal conviction and advocacy for meaningful change.

We were so appreciative of Julia giving up her time to talk to the students about Philosophy in the real world. She is a highly engaging speaker whom the students really enjoyed listening to.
