"Challenging beyond this planet"; Astro Challenge and Astro Olympiad Competition

Competition entrants

Aiko in Year 12 explains more:

The Astro Challenge comprised of 10 multiple choice questions on observational astronomy, followed by a long answer section. TGS students from Years 12 and 13 participated. This opportunity allowed us to study Astrophysics to a higher level, solving questions such as determining the eccentricity and velocity of an orbit, or the distance to a star from its apparent and absolute magnitude. Well done to everyone that took part!

After participating in the Astro Challenge, students Aiko (myself), Valerie and Toby proceeded to Astro Round 1 in January. This was an opportunity to study Astrophysics outside the curriculum and contained questions of a higher level compared to the Astro Challenge, such as an observational astronomy question which involved the interpretations of star maps, which was an exciting area of Physics to explore!

This was a new Olympiad competition that we have never sat before. An interesting opportunity!
