Debating Team represents South East at prestigious Oxford Schools' Competition

Debating Team

Our school’s debating team has once again showcased its exceptional talent by representing the South East in the Oxford Schools' Debating Competition - the world’s toughest school-level debating championship.

Two teams, each consisting of two students, qualified for this prestigious event—an incredible achievement in itself. The competition, held in the British Parliamentary format, challenges students to think critically, argue persuasively, and respond dynamically to complex topics with limited preparation time.

How British Parliamentary Debating Works
In British Parliamentary (BP) debating, four teams of two compete in each debate. The teams are divided into Opening Government, Opening Opposition, Closing Government, and Closing Opposition. Each speaker has a set time to present their arguments, challenge opposing viewpoints, and respond to counterarguments. Judges evaluate the teams based on the clarity, logic, and persuasiveness of their arguments.

Challenging and Thought-Provoking Motions
This year’s motions pushed our debaters to engage with a range of political, ethical, and social issues, including:

This House Would allow athletes to be held legally liable for violent fouls they commit during matches.

This House Believes That the feminist movement in developing countries should refrain from critiquing religious practices that have different rules based on gender.

This House Would allow political parties to designate some of their electoral promises as binding.

This House Believes That developed economies should heavily prioritise the development of nuclear energy.

Our talented speakers—Tilly, Zohha, Zara, and Safwa—rose to the occasion, delivering compelling arguments and engaging in intense debates with top teams from across the country.

An Exciting and Rewarding Experience
The competition day began with an early start, as the team set off from school at 6am. Despite the long journey and the high level of competition, our debaters had a fantastic time, enjoying the opportunity to debate at such an elite level and meet like-minded students from other schools.

We are incredibly proud of Tilly, Zohha, Zara, and Safwa for their outstanding performance and dedication. Their success highlights the strength of our school’s debating program and the value of developing critical thinking and public speaking skills.

Congratulations to our debating team on this remarkable achievement!
